48 Hours in Key Largo: A Local's Guide

How to spend a perfect weekend at the top of the Keys — sunset included.

Scenic Key Largo waterfront near Bayside Grille on Florida Bay

Key Largo is the gateway to the Florida Keys, and a weekend here is plenty of time to fall for it. Here's how a local would spend 48 hours at the top of the island chain — with a Bayside Grille sunset built into both nights.

Day one: reef and relaxation

Start on the water. Key Largo is the dive and snorkel capital of the country, so spend the morning on the reef or exploring John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Grab a casual lunch, take an afternoon to slow down, then head to Bayside Grille for a Champagne Sunset at 4 and dinner as the sky lights up over Florida Bay.

Day two: backcountry and bay

Get out into the calmer bay side — kayak the mangroves, take a backcountry eco tour, or simply find a quiet beach. In the evening, come back to the bay for Sunday Brunch if it's your last morning, or another sunset dinner with live music at the Sunset Bar downstairs.

Local tips

  • Sunset is the main event. Plan each evening around it — it's why people photograph Key Largo.
  • Book your sunset table. The best water-view seats go fast, especially on weekends.
  • Arrive by boat at least once. Tie up at Bayside Grille's dock and make dinner part of the adventure.

However you spend your 48 hours, end them with the most photographed sunset in Key Largo. Reserve a table and we'll save you a spot on the water.
